Return to Jaguar WorldWide-Monthly...Jaguar is equipping all 2006 XJs with a new, state-of-the-art Tire Pressure Monitoring System to enhance vehicle safety, and provide extra peace of mind for driver and passengers.
Unlike "indirect" pressure monitoring systems, which use a car's anti-lock brake sensors to detect drops in tire pressure, Jaguar's TPMS is a "direct" system using radio transmitters affixed to each wheel.
This allows each tire - including the spare - to be accurately and precisely monitored. And, unlike the ABS-based systems, it can detect if all four tires start to lose pressure gradually at similar rates.
Each wheel of the vehicle is fitted with a tiny tire pressure sensor in the valve stem. A small, low frequency transmitter, also incorporated in the valve stem, transmits data via radio frequency to a central processor.
If the pressure in any of the five tires drops by 25 percent of the recommended threshold, a warning light on the XJ's instrument cluster flashes.
"Safety isn't an option at Jaguar. That's why this new system will be fitted to all new 2006 XJs as standard," says Tom Scarpello, VP Marketing for Jaguar North America.
